Mozia island
The Stagnone Nature Reserve lagoon is home to a most peculiar mini archipelago, the centrepiece of which is the small island of Mozia (Mothya). Originally a Phoenician settlement - you can tour the ruins excavated in 1888 by Joseph Whitaker, another marsala-trading Brit - the isle is flat and just 1/4 square mile in total; an open air museum and botanical garden dotted with vineyards and tiny beaches.
